Cake Boss: Cake Art

One of my favorite show is Cake Boss from  channel TLC. Cake Boss is about a baker named Buddy Valastro, who makes cakes. But he doesn’t make any ordinary cakes; he is an artist. Buddy Valastro works with his mother, his four sisters, three brothers-in-law and other family members and friends. They work in a bakery in New Jersey, called Carlos Bakery.

Carlos Bakery’s original owner was Carlo Guastaferro, but was purchased by Buddy Valastro Sr. in 1964. Ever since than, Buddy Sr. dedicated his time at the bakery. He was known for his kind heart and generosity. After his death in March 24th 1994, his son, Buddy Valastro Jr. took over the bakery and continued the Carlo’s Bakery.

Carlo’s Bakery became famous in April 2009 when the premier of Cake Boss aired on TLC. The reality show focuses on the staffs of bakery making elaborate cakes that are specially ordered by customers. However, the show not only focuses on the process of making the cakes, but also the interaction and drama that goes around the work place between the family members.

I love watching Cake Boss because it is amazing how Buddy makes all of these cakes that are seem impossible. Every time the customers ask Buddy Valastro to make the cakes, I always think, ‘There is no way he can make this cake’. However, he always surprises his viewers by making all of these seem-to-be-impossible-cakes. Also, it is amazing that everything from the cake is edible!! I truly believe that Buddy is not just an ordinary baker; he is an artist. He is an artist who expresses his talent through dough, sugar, and icings.

Here are some Buddy’s wonderful and amazing cakes!!

Making Your Own Doll!!

Hi! Today, I would like to show how to make your one-of-a-kind doll!!

I chose to make my doll look like Lady GaGa because her clothes and funky hair styles are always inspirational. : )

Even though I chose a celebrity to be a model for my doll, there are other many great ways to design your doll, so think creatively!

What you Need:

-glue gun

-felt paper

-yarn

-scissor

-beads (for decoration)

-marker/pencil (for outline)

-cloth (for clothes)

Start! ————>

I got the base of my doll from Jung, my friend who is in the Key Club. He made the base of the doll for the club and designed it, but I bought the doll from him about $10 (the money goes to charity) and I reformed it.

First, I made the hair with the yarn. I used yellow since Lady GaGa’s ribbon hair was yellow. In order to make the hair look more realistic, it is important to glue gun the surface of the head with one yarn strand. When you are done with the first layer, add the second, and so on. I added extra hair strands on the side of my doll’s head, because I wanted to make her hair more round. After gluing all the hair, I used scissor to trim her hair, so all the lengths are equal.

Next, I made the black mini dress. Luckily, I found a black cloth in my house. But her dress didn’t look so pretty, so I added sparkly beads on her dress. As you can see,  I used beads that are all in different sizes in order to give more variety.

Next, I made the shoe with a red felt paper. It was hard for me to make them since the doll’s feet were round. I managed to make them by cutting out the design of the shoe and stitching them together with a red string. It is important to make the shoes little bit bigger than the doll’s feet! I made the stocking with a black yarn. I wrapped the yarn around the doll’s legs and glue gunned it under the doll’s dress, so it won’t be visible.

I also made the sunglasses and the mouth with black and red felt paper. I cut out the lips and the base of the sunglasses. I decorated the sunglasses with the beads, which I also used for the dress.

I glue gunned the sunglasses and the lips.

Lastly, I added the most important trademark for Lady GaGa! Her pretty ribbon hair! I wrapped the yellow thread many time and glue gunned the end to make a shape of a ribbon. I stick the ribbon to the top of her head, and Lady GaGa is done!! : )

There are so many ways to decorate and design your doll!

Be creative and you can always add more cool decorations to make your doll look more professional!

Painting with Light

It was not until second semester that I got introduced to paint with light. For second semester, I took digital photography for my second elective. We learned about different photography terms and techniques. Towards the end of the year, we incorporated art in digital photography. This was painting with light. Our teacher told us how to make the shuttle slower and capture the light while we drew pictures. This could not be one with only couple of people. Also, we faced many difficulties. First of all, we couldn’t control the brightness of the background. This made us hard for the light to stand out from the background. Secondly, we had trouble trying to focus on the light. We had to make sure that everything was in focus before we start drawing. Last but not least, we had to draw or write letters backwards since the camera reflects the image backwards. We had to continue drawing without stopping, since we couldn’t know where to start from if we stop drawing. However, with all of these difficulties, I managed to take photos of lights.

I have also posted a video that my teacher showed us. The videos are done by Japanese photographers and painting with the light is the new hot topic in Japan these days. Because of painting with light, many companies are making colorful and funky lights.

These are also videos done by other people. The work they have done are truly amazing.

Reforming shoes

Hi! Today, I would like to show you how to “reform” a pair of white shoes into a more cute and one-of-a-kind.

Materials:

-white shoe

-permanent markers

-pencil/eraser

I bought the white shoes for about $10. They are typical shoes that students wear at school and they are common in every school in Korea. You can get them any stationary store and most of them have all the sizes available. Please make sure that you are using a permanent marker and not a normal marker. You do not want your drawings on the shoes to get erased.

1. Draw your design on the shoes with a pencil. I would recommend starting with a pencil, because you can erase any mistakes. Also, please draw your designs lightly, so they can be erased after you outline them. I drew a skull with a hat.

2. With a sharpie or a permanent marker, outline your design carefully. I used a thin sharpie for outlining. I would recommend using the thin sharpie, because it is easier to control them. Also, the lines don’t get thick.

3. Color your designs with the permanent markers and you are done!

I drew my design simple, because I didn’t want this project to get too complicated. Although my design used couple of colors, I’m happy with the outcome. You can draw more complicated designs and you can even add some ribbons or buttons on the shoes! Also, you do not need to use permanent markers to color the shoes. You can use acrylic paint or anything that does not get erased easily. I will post pictures for ideas about reforming shoes. I hope you enjoyed reading about my simple steps of how to reform shoes!

Tablet

I would like to show what I drew with tablet. Tablet is a useful tool that helps us able to draw smoothly and uncontrollably.

I have bamboo table which is from Wacom and they have different kinds of tablets too. They very in sizes, functions, and prices.

http://alexcarpenter.files.wordpress.com/2008/12/wacom_bamboo_1.jpg

I drew these pictures with SAI tool and photoshop. They were for Spanish festival and I have put them on the cook book.

Tablet is a great tool to use if you are interested in drawing on your computer using different art software. They are better to control than a track pad or a mouse. Some of the art programs you can use are: Photoshop, SAI tool, Corel painter, and opencanvas. Seashore is another great program that you can use on mac computers. However, you need to remember that just like a normal pen, tablet pen needs to be changed to a new one, since the tip of the pen gets dull after time. Other than that, I encourage you guys to start drawing not just on the paper, but also on your computers too!

Making Stickers!

Stickers,stickers,stickers!

I love stickers! They are one of the best way to decorate your things! I like them because they are diverse and cute! Theycome in all different sizes, shapes, and colors! However, I found out that there aren’t always the one that I want. Sometimes I want to decorate with stickers that has my own drawing on it. After searching for ways to create my own sticker, I have finally and successively finished my first hand-made stickers! I would like to show/teach how I made them! 🙂

Start★

Materials:

-pencil/eraser                           -Ink Jet clear label

-colored pencils                       -Print label

-markers                                      -scissors

1.

Draw your sticker designs on the normal print label with a pencil. *Make sure you are drawing on the right side! The other side would be the sticky side! I drew random objects and characters. Sometimes it is good to have a theme while drawing your stickers.

2.

Outline your drawings with a balck pen or a thin marker. It is good to outline them first before you color them, because they look more neat. However, if you prefer to color them differently, you can do whatever you like. I also colored the characters’ eyes with balck marker.

3.

Color your stikcers with colored pencils, markers, or with any type of materials that you want. I colored them with colored pencils, because it is easier for me to use and I can show emphasis with them. When I put emphasis, it creates more values on my pictures. After coloring your drawings, put the clear label on top of your pictures. This will be your top layer and the clear label will prevent from your drawings getting smudged. *Make sure there are no air bubbles while you put the clear label on!

4.

Carefully cut your pictures with a scissor. I like to cut them very close along the picture. However, it is up to you how you want to cut them.

Your stickers are done! Here are some places where you can decorate with your stickers!

Notebook

Diary

Cell phone

Bonus!

I made my own macbook sticker! I’ve always wanted one of those stickers, so I made my own! 🙂

Weekly Planner

Hi! I would like to show you how to make a weekly planner!

You can use it as a white board too! It is simple and easy to make. I hope you like it! : )

Start!☞

Materials:

– paper                               -pencil/eraser

-construction paper        -self-adhesive laminating sheet

-marker                             -scissor

-colored pencils               -glue stick

*These are just the list of things I used! Remember that you are not limited to these materials!

1. Make a border around the paper using the construction paper.

2. Also make the columns using the construction paper. I only made 6 columns because I wanted only from Monday to Saturday, but it is up to you to decide how many columns you want to make.

3. Write the days of the week and draw any pictures you want!

I drew a girl in each column doing different activities everyday. Also, I drew a character that I created on the last column!

4. Color your drawings with markers, colored pencils, etc. Outlining your drawing with a pen first always helps!

5. Laminate your drawing and you are done!

*I know you can’t tell if I laminated my planner in this picture…but I did!

6. Now you can write your homework, event, schedule, and etc with a dry-erase marker!

Start organizing your week and let’s get things done!

Thanks for reading!

I hope you liked it!
