Illusionist: M.C.Escher and Julian Beever

As you can see, my previous post was about art of optical illusion. Today, I would like to talk about my favorite two illusion artists. One of them is from the past, while the other is a modern artist.

M.C. Escher

Maurits Cornelis Escher, a graphic artist, was born in 1898 and died in 1972. He is known as the world’s most famous graphic artist and his work is still enjoyed by millions of people. M.C. Escher is famous for creating pictures with impossible structures. These include Ascending and Descending, Relativity and Transformation Prints. Although he did some realistic art work, people are more familiar with M.C. Escher with his creative, yet strange illusion art.

Now, here are some of M.C. Escher’s work:

Julian beever

Meet Julian Beever! He is my favorite illusion artist who is still alive! He is a British chalk artist, who draws his art on pavements and murals on the streets. He has been doing his work since 1990s and he still continues to draw. He uses a method called, anamorphosis, which is a projection technique that is used to make 2D art into 3D if the drawing is viewed at a correct angle. Beever first designs his sketch on paper, and then checks is his sketch is going to work using camera lenses. His work is usually based on music. Beever’s amazing art has made the streets and walls of many streets colorful and unique, thus spreading his pursue of illusion art to the community.

Here are some of Julian Beever’s work:

I don’t know how he made this but it seems pretty amazing!

Modern Design Poster

Posters are everywhere. Starting from a school poster, promoting up coming Book Fair, to a poster in an Art Museum, made by famous artist, we can easily spot them in our lives. The type of posters that I was particularly interested in were modern design posters. These posters are simple, yet leave strong images on the viewers. After looking at several posters, I decided to make one by myself. However, I didn’t know how I should design my poster. I was brainstorming ideas while watching a TV. Then, I saw TeenTop, a Korean boy band group, on the TV show. I have listened to their song and watched their music video before. While I was watching the show, one of the member grabbed my attention. Niel, a boy with silver hair with a little bit of wine colored streaks, thick lips, and black eyeliner, was singing. Suddenly, I thought of a great idea for my poster! Yes! I wanted to make a poster of Niel.

After deciding my idea, I had to design and think about how I can represent Niel on to a dull poster board. I went to a near stationary store and looked at all the different colored papers. I chose the color for his hair, eyes, and lips. I thought Niel’s trademark were those three, so I picked the colors that would be appropriate for him.  So, here it is, how I made Niel poster! 🙂

Start!

What you need:

-colored papers

-poster board

-scissors

-glue

-pencil

1. Cut out the base of the hair

2. Add streaks with a different colored paper to make the hair texture

3. Cut out the eyes using a different colored paper. (I used silver, because my poster board was already black)

4. Cut out the shape of the lips. Since I used light purple for the lips, I used dark purple for the lips lines.

5. Use a bright colored paper for the highlights.

6. Arrange the eye, lips, and hair on to the poster board, and glue them on.

I cut out ‘Niel’ with a light green paper and glued it to the bottom of the poster to make it look more complete!

Now you are DONE!

Thanks for reading!

World of Graffiti

I bet at least once in your life, you have seen many scribbly, yet colorful words or pictures on the walls of the street. Those drawing (or writings) are called  Graffiti. Today, I would like to explain little bit about world of Graffiti. 🙂

Did you know that Graffiti existed during the ancient time of Rome or even before longer? That’s right. When the Romans conquered a region, they would write on the buildings of the places they took over. Cavemen also drew graffiti inside their cave walls. They drew pictures and illustrations that represented their everyday life, such as hunting. So, what does Graffiti exactly mean? According to Dictionary.com, Graffiti means markings, as initials, slogans, or drawings, written, spray-painted, or sketched on a sidewalk, wall of a building or public restroom. According to this definition, even the drawings that 6 or 7 years old doodle on the sidewalk can be a form of Graffiti!

The first Graffiti boom occurred in New York, which is one of the most crowded city in US. It was easy for Graffiti artists to do their work in New York, because it had busy streets with lots of old, plain walls and there were many places where the artists could draw graffitis without getting into troubles. From New York, graffiti spread out to other states. However, the first graffitis didn’t start out with colorful and vibrant pictures or words. They were just simple as writing one’s name on the wall or gangs marking their territories. Soon, many young artists viewed graffiti as a form of art and used it to express themselves. Lee Quinones, one of the famous graffiti artists, changed the dull Brooklyn bridge into a colorful art gallery.

Graffiti, which started in subways and streets, quickly became a competition for artists. They had to find a space for their graffiti and usually, this lead to a quarrel   between the property owner and the artist. There are many people to this day, view graffiti as an act of gang activity or disruptive for the community. However, there are increasing number of graffiti artists these days and they try to convince the people that graffiti is another form of art by decorating the community or making a dull place into an more vibrant environment.

Here is a video of  Japanese Graffiti artists drawing many different pictures. Enjoy!

Painting with Light

It was not until second semester that I got introduced to paint with light. For second semester, I took digital photography for my second elective. We learned about different photography terms and techniques. Towards the end of the year, we incorporated art in digital photography. This was painting with light. Our teacher told us how to make the shuttle slower and capture the light while we drew pictures. This could not be one with only couple of people. Also, we faced many difficulties. First of all, we couldn’t control the brightness of the background. This made us hard for the light to stand out from the background. Secondly, we had trouble trying to focus on the light. We had to make sure that everything was in focus before we start drawing. Last but not least, we had to draw or write letters backwards since the camera reflects the image backwards. We had to continue drawing without stopping, since we couldn’t know where to start from if we stop drawing. However, with all of these difficulties, I managed to take photos of lights.

I have also posted a video that my teacher showed us. The videos are done by Japanese photographers and painting with the light is the new hot topic in Japan these days. Because of painting with light, many companies are making colorful and funky lights.

These are also videos done by other people. The work they have done are truly amazing.

Reforming shoes

Hi! Today, I would like to show you how to “reform” a pair of white shoes into a more cute and one-of-a-kind.

Materials:

-white shoe

-permanent markers

-pencil/eraser

I bought the white shoes for about $10. They are typical shoes that students wear at school and they are common in every school in Korea. You can get them any stationary store and most of them have all the sizes available. Please make sure that you are using a permanent marker and not a normal marker. You do not want your drawings on the shoes to get erased.

1. Draw your design on the shoes with a pencil. I would recommend starting with a pencil, because you can erase any mistakes. Also, please draw your designs lightly, so they can be erased after you outline them. I drew a skull with a hat.

2. With a sharpie or a permanent marker, outline your design carefully. I used a thin sharpie for outlining. I would recommend using the thin sharpie, because it is easier to control them. Also, the lines don’t get thick.

3. Color your designs with the permanent markers and you are done!

I drew my design simple, because I didn’t want this project to get too complicated. Although my design used couple of colors, I’m happy with the outcome. You can draw more complicated designs and you can even add some ribbons or buttons on the shoes! Also, you do not need to use permanent markers to color the shoes. You can use acrylic paint or anything that does not get erased easily. I will post pictures for ideas about reforming shoes. I hope you enjoyed reading about my simple steps of how to reform shoes!

Tablet

I would like to show what I drew with tablet. Tablet is a useful tool that helps us able to draw smoothly and uncontrollably.

I have bamboo table which is from Wacom and they have different kinds of tablets too. They very in sizes, functions, and prices.

http://alexcarpenter.files.wordpress.com/2008/12/wacom_bamboo_1.jpg

I drew these pictures with SAI tool and photoshop. They were for Spanish festival and I have put them on the cook book.

Tablet is a great tool to use if you are interested in drawing on your computer using different art software. They are better to control than a track pad or a mouse. Some of the art programs you can use are: Photoshop, SAI tool, Corel painter, and opencanvas. Seashore is another great program that you can use on mac computers. However, you need to remember that just like a normal pen, tablet pen needs to be changed to a new one, since the tip of the pen gets dull after time. Other than that, I encourage you guys to start drawing not just on the paper, but also on your computers too!

Elements of art (line and color)

This was a video that me and my partner made for our art final. Our art teacher required us to make a video about elements of art. We picked line and color. As you can see, we were required to put famous artists’ artworks about the elements and show real life examples. However, we focused more on creativity and using variety of art materials. We used different types of materials such as, pencil, paint, water gun, and more. We had a hard time trying to fit all of our art demonstrations in two minutes. We had to fast forward every video that we took and cut parts of the video. We were able to find a song that goes very well with the video, which is The Big Bang by DJ Rush. We were able to upload the video on youtube because the song is from creativecommons. Our favorite art demonstration was pouring paint on the white shoes. After dropping paint, you can’t tell where the shoes are, since the shoes blend in with the white background. However, it looked so cool after we lifted up the shoes and put them next to the paint. Also, spraying paint with the water guns were fun too, but it took us time to finish it. We had to pour the color into the container and we had to be very careful not to spill them. Another problem was that the paint ran out quickly. Other than those, it was a good experience. We had fun filming and making this project and I hope you guys enjoy it too!
